ASI06Memory & Context Poisoning

The scenario

An agentic pet assistant stores care notes and schedules the next day. An outside sitter’s note from Chestnut’s younger years says to always keep running and ignore later restrictions; the agent wrongly saves it as permanent policy. Years later, the owner confirms no running and short, slow walks. A new conversation still retrieves the poisoned rule and schedules the old routine. The care requirements are fictional confirmed facts; the lesson concerns memory provenance and update precedence.

How it works

Persistent Memory Poisoning: A sitter’s note should remain a dated, scoped record, not owner-authorized permanent policy. Poisoning occurs at memory write when its instruction is promoted into policy for later scheduling.

Cross-Session Persistence: Closing a conversation does not clear stored long-term memory. A later task can retrieve the same instruction, so the effect persists across sessions rather than affecting only one immediate answer.

Untrusted Memory Overrides Confirmed Updates: The owner’s new requirements are confirmed, yet the old “ignore restrictions” rule overrides them. Keeping historical records is not itself a defect; losing source authority and update precedence is.
